Built-In Ice Maker Repair

Every ice maker needs four things at once: water at the right pressure, enough cold, power, and a bin it can sense. Most dead or slow ones are missing one of them; the rest come down to a valve, a frozen fill line, scale, a drain or the module itself.

In short: check that ice making is switched on, the bin is seated, the supply valve is open, the filter is not overdue and the freezer is near 0°F. A freezer ice maker that stopped is usually waiting on one of those. An undercounter ice maker with its own compressor making thin, cloudy or stuck cubes usually needs descaling or has a drain, valve or harvest problem. Orange County's hard water is behind a lot of both.

Which kind of ice maker you have

TypeWhere you find itHow it makes ice
Crescent-cube ice makerSub-Zero, Viking and Monogram built-ins and freezersA valve fills a metal mold, freezer air freezes it, a small heater loosens the cubes and an ejector sweeps them into the bin.
Twist or flip-tray ice makerThermador and Miele freezer columns, Fisher & Paykel columns, Bertazzoni built-insWater freezes in a tray. A motor twists it (Fisher & Paykel, Bertazzoni) or turns it over while a heater beneath frees the cubes (Miele, Thermador). Sensor, heater and electronics are usually one sealed module.
Ice maker on the fresh-food sideFrench-door models such as the Dacor DRF36C100A compact ice maker in a small compartment in the refrigerator section, cooled by a refrigerant line from the freezer circuit and a small fan. A frozen-up compartment, a failed fan or its sensor stops the ice.
Undercounter clear-ice machineSub-Zero UC-15I (UC-15IO and UC-15IPO outdoors) and the older 315, 235 and 506, which are not outdoor modelsIts own compressor freezes moving water a thin layer at a time, in cube molds on the UC-15I and 315 or as a slab that a heated grid cuts into cubes on the 235 and 506. Minerals stay in the leftover water and go down the drain.

Water pressure and cold

Every maker sets a water pressure range and a freezer temperature the ice maker waits for before it makes ice. Low pressure, often from a partly closed valve, a clogged filter or an RO system, gives small or hollow cubes; very high pressure can make a valve weep and fuse the bin into a block. A Bertazzoni makes ice only while its convertible compartment is set as a freezer. We measure both against your model's limits.

What you can check first

  1. Is it switched on? Many units ship with ice making off. Look for an ice icon or button on the control, a switch on the ice maker itself, or a wire arm that has been left up. Sabbath and vacation modes stop ice too.
  2. Is the bin seated? Tray-style models check for the bin with a lever or a light beam and will not harvest without it. A bin pushed in crooked counts as missing.
  3. Is there water? Open the shutoff valve fully and check the filter date.
  4. Is the freezer cold? Near 0°F is right. A freezer that has drifted into the teens makes little or no ice before anything else shows.
  5. Give it time. A new install or a restart can take 12 to 24 hours before the first harvest. Throw away the first bin of ice after a long idle or a filter change.

What fails on freezer ice makers

Water supply, filter and valve

What it usually is: a supply valve left partly closed, a saddle valve choked with sediment, a kinked line, an overdue filter, or a fill valve with a clogged screen. Many built-ins have two valves in series, one a safety valve, and either can fail.

What you can check: the shutoff, the filter, and whether the water dispenser pours a strong stream.

What we do: measure flow and pressure at the unit, test both valves, replace a saddle valve with a proper shutoff and replace what failed.

Frozen fill tube

What it usually is: the line into the mold or tray has a small heater to keep it open. If the heater fails, or a valve drips after each fill, the line freezes shut and the ice maker cycles dry.

What you can check: ice where the fill tube meets the mold, or cubes fused into a block. Do not chip at it.

What we do: thaw the line, test the heater and the valve, and replace the one at fault.

The ice maker module

What it usually is: a worn drive motor, a failed mold heater or sensor, or a tray that no longer turns. On most twist and flip-tray designs these parts are not sold separately, so the module is replaced as a whole. Miele and Thermador modules can flash a fault pattern on their own light, and Bertazzoni shows a water circuit message when repeated fills fail.

What you can check: whether the arm, tray or ejector moves at all over a few hours. Note any flashing light.

What we do: run the self-test where the control has one, and rule out the supply, the freezer temperature and the dispenser before ordering a module.

Dispenser and door ice

What it usually is: ice made but not delivered: a jammed auger, a frozen chute, a flap or switch, or a frosted duct on door-ice models. Our job write-up Thermador Refrigerator Ice Dispenser Not Working (Irvine, September 2026) is a typical example.

What you can check: ice in the bin but none at the door, and clumps blocking the bin outlet.

What we do: clear and test the auger motor, chute heater, flap and switch, and look for the door seal or duct problem behind a frosted ice compartment.

What fails on undercounter ice makers and ice machines

Scale

What it usually is: a clear-ice machine sends part of every batch of water down the drain to carry minerals away. What stays behind scales the freezing surface, the water distributor and the pump, and cubes come out thin or cloudy.

What you can check: clean the bin and change the filter on schedule, at least every six months on a UC-15I.

What we do: descale with an ice machine cleaner, sanitize, and on the yearly visit take the water system partly apart. That is why these machines should be installed so they can slide out.

Drain

What it usually is: a gravity drain that has clogged or lost its slope, or a failed drain pump. Water backs into the bin and melts the ice into a block, or the machine stops.

What you can check: standing water in the bin, a kinked hose, an overflowing standpipe.

What we do: clear the drain, re-route a line that sags and replace a failed pump.

Harvest, inlet valve and bin control

What it usually is: the valve that warms the freezing surface at the end of each cycle stops opening, so the ice stays frozen in place; on a 235 or 506, the heated grid that cuts the slab into cubes fails; a clogged inlet valve; or a bin thermostat that stops the machine early.

What you can check: an empty bin with ice still stuck where it formed. Do not pry at it.

What we do: test each part through a cycle and replace the one that failed. Low output with a clean condenser points us at the sealed system, which we repair in-house; see sealed-system repair.

Hard water and water treatment

Most of Orange County has hard water, and ice makers feel it first: valve screens clog and ice machines scale. A good filter changed on time solves most of it. Polyphosphate feeders can reduce scale without curing it, though with low-mineral water some leave slime behind. Softeners are another matter: Sub-Zero advises against softened water for its Classic built-in ice makers and the 315, since softener salt can damage the ice maker and the cubes can come out soft and white. We look at your supply before suggesting anything.

How we work

We work from inside the freezer, the machine compartment or the kickplate, with floors and panels protected. We carry common valves and fittings; a brand module usually takes a few business days, and you hear the lead time before you decide. Units in an island or by a pool are covered on outdoor kitchen refrigeration repair.

What ice maker repair costs

A visit costs $79, which pays for the trip and for finding the fault. Approve the written price and that amount goes toward the repair; the price stays as written once work starts.

Ice maker repair: questions

What is the difference between an ice maker and an ice machine?

An ice maker lives inside a freezer and uses the freezer's cold. An ice machine is a separate appliance with its own compressor, a freezing surface that builds clear cubes layer by layer, and a drain.

How much ice should a built-in ice maker make in a day?

It varies by make and by how cold the freezer is. A freezer ice maker drops a handful of cubes each cycle and slows sharply when the freezer runs warm. A Sub-Zero UC-15I ice machine makes about 50 pounds a day in a cool room.

Does an undercounter ice machine need a drain?

Yes. It flushes water every cycle. A gravity model needs an open drain below it; a pump model can push water up to a higher drain.

Why is the ice from my ice machine cloudy?

Usually scale where the ice forms or in the water distributor, an overdue filter, or water too warm at the inlet. A descale and sanitize normally brings clear cubes back.

Can I run my ice maker on reverse osmosis water?

For a freezer ice maker, often yes, if pressure stays in range; Monogram, among others, wants the refrigerator's own filter bypassed, or the cubes come out hollow. Ice machines differ: Sub-Zero does not recommend RO for the 235, and the 315 needs RO water treated again first. Check the model before connecting one.

Why did the ice in my bin melt into one block?

On an ice machine, usually a backed-up drain. In a freezer, a dripping valve, a freezer that warmed, or ice left unused for weeks.
