Professional Range and Rangetop Repair
Commercial-style ranges from 30 to 60 inches, all-gas or dual fuel, and the rangetops that share their burners. Most repairs are a burner's spark parts, a gas oven igniter, a dual fuel element or relay, or a cooling fan, and most are done with the range where it stands.

In short: a pro range is three systems in one heavy frame: a gas top, a gas or electric oven, and the fans and cutoffs that protect the controls from heat. A fault usually stays inside one of the three, so that is the first thing we narrow down, most often without moving the range.
The ranges and rangetops we repair
We repair these across Orange County. A rangetop is a pro range's gas top set into the counter, with the same parts and faults.
| Brand | Model lines | What matters for the repair |
|---|---|---|
| Wolf | Dual fuel and all-gas ranges, rangetops | Stacked burners with a simmer tier; on dual fuel tops a spark fault usually stays with one burner. |
| Viking | Professional gas and dual fuel, and the 3 Series | Professional models: several burners often share a spark module, and many gas ovens use a glow-bar. The 30-inch 3 Series: a spark module on each burner valve and a spark-lit oven. |
| Thermador | Pro Grand and Pro Harmony | Star burners and two ExtraLow simmer burners; some parts change with the production code on the rating plate. |
| Monogram | ZDP dual fuel, ZGP all-gas, ZGU rangetops | Grill and griddle igniters must glow hot before gas flows, so a worn igniter is the first suspect. |
| Dacor | HDPR dual fuel and the newer DOP pro ranges, some with a steam oven | Dacor's HDPR guide calls for the whole valve manifold when a burner switch fails, though the switch unscrews on its own, so we look for the switch alone before quoting. |
| JennAir | Pro-style gas and dual fuel | Gas models have separate spark modules for top and oven; a new control must be set to the model number. |
We also repair Bertazzoni ranges and the 36-inch Miele gas range. See also wall oven repair, cooktop repair and all services.
How a pro range works
- The top. Each knob turns a valve with a switch that starts the spark; on current ranges the module also senses the flame and relights a burner that blows out. Some ranges give each burner its own module and others share one, so a whole top clicking points at a shared part or one wet switch.
- A gas oven. Many light from a glow-bar, and the gas valve opens only once the glow-bar draws enough current, so an aging one can glow orange and never let gas through. Others spark and watch for flame.
- A dual fuel oven. Elements switched by relays on a board, with a cavity sensor. They need a 240-volt circuit, and on the 208-volt supply in some condo buildings they simply heat slower.
- Protection. A cooling blower runs long after cooking, and a thermal cutoff shuts the oven down if the controls overheat. On some ranges that cutoff works once and must be replaced.
How we repair a range in a finished kitchen
Most repairs never move the range. Valves, switches, electrodes and spark modules are reached from above or behind the front panel. Sensors, elements, fans, hinges and most latches come out through the oven. Only parts behind the back panel, such as the cooling blower, cutoffs, oven gas valve and regulator, bring the range forward.
A 36-inch all-gas range can weigh around 400 pounds, and one maker lists its largest 48-inch models at up to 700. When one comes out, we shut the gas and power, cover the floor, tape the counter edges and lift the front so it rolls on its rear casters, never by a door handle. The anti-tip bracket goes back on afterward, and so do a rangetop's hold-down brackets or screws where it has them. Every gas fitting we open is leak-tested, and every burner is lit and its flame and relighting checked.
We do not move or replace gas supply lines; if the connector is too short or too old to flex, we tell you what a plumber needs to do.
What fails on a pro range, most common first
A burner clicks, lights late or will not light
What it usually is: water in a valve switch or at the electrode after a boil-over, a cap not sitting flat, crusted ports, a cracked electrode or a weak module. A burner that stops clicking only when another one is on usually has its spark leads swapped at the module, often by an earlier repair.
What you can check: with the top cold, turn each cap until it drops flat, and give a wet burner a day to dry. If the clicking will not stop, switch off the breaker.
What we do: test the spark, switch, lead and module, and the outlet's ground and polarity, which flame sensing depends on. More on Wolf, Viking and Thermador clicking.
The gas oven is slow to light, or never lights
What it usually is: a weak glow-bar, so the oven lights after minutes, only sometimes or never. Bake and broil usually have their own igniter and valve, so one can fail alone. On spark-lit ovens it is more often the module, electrode or a valve coil.
What you can check: allow up to 90 seconds after setting it, since a glow-bar has to heat before the valve opens. If you smell gas with no flame, leave the house and call the gas company or 911 from outside.
What we do: check whether the igniter heats enough to open the gas valve, then test the valve and the oven control.
The dual fuel oven heats slowly or not at all
What it usually is: an element burned open, a relay that no longer closes, a tripped cutoff or a sensor reading wrong. One dead mode usually means that mode's element or relay.
What you can check: which modes still heat, and an oven thermometer on the center rack after twenty minutes.
What we do: measure elements, relays and sensor, and find why a cutoff tripped before replacing it.
The oven quit but the burners still work
What it usually is: the cooling blower stopped, heat built up behind the panel, and a cutoff removed power from the oven. The top has its own spark parts and carries on.
What you can check: the breaker, and whether you heard the blower before it quit. A fan that runs on after cooking and then stops is normal.
What we do: test the blower, the part that proves it is running, and the cutoff, with the range brought forward.
Griddle, grill or French top will not heat
What it usually is: an igniter, gas safety valve or thermostat, or the element on electric griddles. Some ignition boards stop after a few failed tries until the knob is cycled. A Wolf charbroiler set below full can burn blue and spark, which is not a fault.
What you can check: the knob fully on, a clean grease tray, and one off and on cycle.
What we do: test ignition, valve and thermostat, lifting the heavy griddle plate without marking the top.
Latch, hinges, convection fan and boards
What it usually is: a latch motor or switch that keeps the door locked, worn hinges, a convection motor with tired bearings, or less often a relay board, knob encoder or touch panel.
What you can check: let a locked oven cool fully, then switch it off and on. Never force the door.
What we do: test the latch, fit hinges as a pair, and replace a board only after the parts around it test good. Wolf range error codes shows how one range reports these faults.
Stay safe. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas company or 911 from outside, without touching switches. Do not slide the range out or open its back panel. Yellow, sooty flames mean the gas is not burning cleanly; turn that burner off and do not use it until it is checked. In a power outage, never light the oven or griddle by hand.

How a range visit works
- Call or book online. Tell us the brand, all-gas or dual fuel, and the symptom; a photo of the rating tag under the control panel or behind the kick panel helps. See contact.
- Diagnosis. We protect the floor and find the cause with measurements.
- Written price. Parts and labor in writing before work starts, and it does not change.
- Repair and test. Common parts are on the van; ordered parts are installed on a second visit.
- Warranty. Parts and labor are covered, and a return for the same fault within 90 days has no service-call fee.

Professional range repair: questions
Do you repair both all-gas and dual fuel ranges?
Yes. The top is the same gas system on both; only the oven differs, with gas burners or electric elements.
Will you have to pull my range out?
Usually not. Only parts at the back, such as the cooling blower or oven gas valve, need it brought forward over floor protection.
Can I keep using the burners while the oven is broken?
Usually, yes, since the top has its own ignition. Stop if you smell gas, the flames turn yellow and sooty, or the breaker trips.
Do you repair rangetops as well as ranges?
Yes, griddle and grill included. A rangetop has the same valves and spark parts as a pro range top, and we refit any hold-down brackets if it has to be lifted.
Is a 15-year-old pro range worth fixing?
Usually. Ignition parts, valves, elements, fans and latches are still made for most of them. A rusted-through burner box or controls no longer made are the usual reasons to replace.
Are you a Wolf or Viking factory service center?
No. OC Built-In is an independent service of Cactus Appliance in Irvine, not affiliated with any range maker, and we back our repairs with our own warranty.
