Thermador Pro Range Repair

Thermador Pro Grand and Pro Harmony ranges, all-gas and dual fuel, from 30-inch models to the largest ones with two ovens. Most repairs are a burner's ignition or ExtraLow simmer, a gas oven igniter or an electric element, a cooling fan or a door latch, mostly done from the top or the front.

$79 service call, applied to the repair. Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 7 PM.

In short: a Thermador pro range is a gas top of Star burners and spark parts, with ExtraLow burners run by a simmer board, over gas ovens (igniters and safety valves) or electric ones (elements and relays). Top and ovens have separate controls, so a fault in one rarely touches the other.

How to tell which Thermador range you have

  • The model number. PRD is dual fuel and PG, PRG are all-gas. Propane models are marked by an LP ending on older PG ranges and by a PRL prefix on newer ones. Then come the width (30, 36, 48 or, on Pro Grand, 60), the number of burners, and letters for the griddle or grill.
  • The FD number. It dates the range and decides which parts fit; how to read it is on Thermador repair.
  • Pro Grand or Pro Harmony. Pro Harmony is the simpler line, in 30, 36 and 48 inches. Pro Grand is the flagship, with more top layouts and a gas grill on some models.

How a Thermador pro range is built

  • Star burners. The five-pointed cap gives the flame more ports than a round one. It sits on a brass base or, on the Pedestal Star design of many newer all-gas and dual fuel models, on a raised cast-iron pedestal. Every burner relights itself if the flame goes out.
  • ExtraLow simmer. On most models the two left burners have an XLO valve with a solenoid and a sensor that reads the knob. At XLO a simmer board pulses the flame, on about 8 seconds and off about 52; between SIM and XLO the rhythm changes to give a range of low heats.
  • Griddle and grill. The electric griddle runs on a thermostat, so a cold griddle points to the element or the thermostat. The Pro Grand gas grill lights from a hot surface igniter.
  • Controls and protection. An oven board per oven, the simmer board, igniter boards and the spark module sit under the burner trays. A cooling fan at the back is proved by a sensor or an air switch, some ranges add thermal fuses, and a motorized latch locks the door for cleaning.

What fails on a Thermador range, most common first

Burner clicking, or no spark

What it usually is: water in a valve switch or at an electrode after a boil-over or wet cleaning makes the top click with the knobs off. No spark points to a cracked electrode, a loose igniter wire, a worn switch or a weak module, and a badly grounded outlet can keep the whole top sparking.

What you can check: caps seated flat, parts dry. If it clicks nonstop with the knobs off, switch off the range's breaker until it dries or we arrive.

What we do: test switch, electrode, wiring, module and the outlet. Full guide: Thermador burner clicking.

ExtraLow burner will not simmer

What it usually is: the flame stays on full at XLO, goes out for good or never cycles. The solenoid, the knob sensor, a connector or the simmer board is at fault; we test the board last.

What you can check: if the burner lights and holds on HI, gas and spark are fine.

What we do: test each part of the simmer circuit and confirm the on-off rhythm at XLO.

Uneven, noisy or yellow flame

What it usually is: a cap not seated, ports clogged by a spill, or, on pedestal burners, parts under the cap that have shifted out of line, so gas and air mix badly. The flame roars, leaves gaps between the points of the star or burns yellow.

What you can check: reseat the cap, then swap it with a cap of the same size from a burner that works. If the problem moves with the cap, the cap is the cause.

What we do: realign the burner parts under the cap and check the flame on every setting. On propane a soft pop at shutoff and slight yellow tips are normal.

Gas oven slow to light or not heating

What it usually is: an aging hot surface igniter that glows but no longer passes enough current to open its safety valve, a spark electrode or ignition module, or the bake burner solenoid. Broil has its own igniter and valve, so bake can fail while broil works.

What you can check: wait up to about 50 seconds after setting Bake. If you smell gas with no flame, turn it off, leave the house and call the gas company or 911 from outside.

What we do: measure igniter current and test flame sensing and valves. More in Thermador oven not heating.

Dual fuel oven slow to preheat or not heating

What it usually is: an open bake, broil or convection element, a relay on the oven board, or a thermal fuse. A 208-volt supply, found in some condo buildings, slows every preheat with nothing broken.

What you can check: which modes still heat, and whether the breaker trips when one starts.

What we do: measure elements and relays. On the Pro Harmony the bake element comes out from the front with the door off, so the range stays in place.

Cooling fan, thermal fuse and heat in the controls

What it usually is: a fan with worn bearings, or one whose sensor or air switch no longer reports to the control; on some ranges a thermal fuse opens after overheating and the oven goes dead.

What you can check: a fan that runs on after cooking, on newer ranges for quite a while, then stops by itself is working as designed.

What we do: test fan, proving part and fuses, and find why the heat built up.

Convection fan, door latch and hinges

What it usually is: worn convection motor bearings or a loose blade; a latch motor or its plunger switch that stops speed clean; sprung hinges that wear so the door drops or slams.

What you can check: on the all-gas Pro Grand the convection fan starts only once preheat is over, which is normal.

What we do: replace the motor or blade from inside the cavity and test the latch. When one hinge is worn the other is usually close behind, so we replace them as a pair and check the gasket.

What the range tells an owner

When the control finds a fault, two blue LEDs blink a code: count the first light's blinks, then the second's, so four and then three is code 43. A click from the ExtraLow burners at low settings is their solenoid, and orange streaks in a fresh flame are dust burning off. Both are normal.

Stay safe. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas company or 911 from outside. In a power outage, do not light the ExtraLow burners, griddle or grill by hand, and check your use and care guide before lighting any burner manually. Do not remove the control panel or slide the range out yourself: it is heavy, held by an anti-tip bracket and fed by a gas line.

Repair or replace a Thermador range

What failedOur usual advice
Electrode, switch, module, igniter, element, fan, latch, hinges or gasketRepair. Wear parts, available for most FD numbers.
Simmer parts, a burner valve or an oven boardUsually repair, once the part for your FD number and its lead time are confirmed.
Several boards on an older range, a rusted burner box, or controls no longer madeConsider replacing. A new range must fit the opening, the hood and the supply.

What a Thermador range repair costs

The service call is $79, applied to the repair when you approve the written price. Common parts are on the van; a simmer board, valve or oven board for your FD number comes from a distributor, usually in a few business days, and you hear the lead time first.

Thermador ranges: questions

Is a Pro Grand repaired differently from a Pro Harmony?

The tops work the same way. What changes the oven repair is the fuel: burners and igniters on all-gas models, elements and relays on dual fuel. Parts lists differ by line and FD number.

Why does my ExtraLow burner keep going out and coming back?

That is how it holds a very low heat: the simmer board pulses the flame on and off. If it never relights or stays on full, the simmer circuit needs testing.

Why does a fan keep running after I turn the oven off?

It is the cooling fan protecting the controls, and on newer Thermador ranges it keeps running until the oven has cooled a good way. If it never stops, or never runs, have it checked.

Why does my Thermador gas oven take so long to light?

The igniter heats up before the gas valve opens, which takes 15 to 50 seconds depending on the model. Much longer, or no flame, usually means a weak igniter.

Can you repair a 48-inch Thermador range without moving it?

Most repairs, yes, from the top or the front. For parts at the back, such as the cooling fan and thermal fuses, we bring the range forward on padding.

Where is the model and FD number on my Thermador range?

Behind the kick panel on Pro Grand all-gas ranges, and under the control panel above the oven door on the Pro Harmony. Send us a phone photo.
