Thermador Built-In Refrigerator Repair
Most Thermador refrigeration in Orange County kitchens is the Freedom line: refrigerator and freezer columns, freezer columns with ice and water in the door, and 36-inch bottom-freezers. All of them keep the compressor and condenser at floor level behind the toe kick and the cooling coil up top, and almost every repair is done with the unit still in its opening.

In short: send us the model from the label inside the compartment. Most repairs are the ice maker and water supply, the door dispenser, the condenser or a fan, defrost, door seals and electronics. Sealed-system failures are rarer. We are an independent service, not affiliated with BSH Home Appliances or Thermador.
Which Thermador refrigerator you have
Columns stand alone or in pairs, usually a refrigerator column beside a freezer column. The 36-inch bottom-freezer puts both sections in one cabinet. The letters after the width tell us which one we are walking up to:
| Model starts with | What it is | What that means for service |
|---|---|---|
| T24IR, T30IR and other IR models | All-refrigerator column | One compressor and coil, no ice maker. A warm IR column beside a cold freezer column is a fault in that column alone. |
| T18IF and other IF models | Freezer column with an ice maker | The ice maker, its valves and the filter in the base account for most calls. |
| T18ID, T24ID | Freezer column with ice and water in the door | Adds an auger and crusher, a chilled water tank, door electronics and wiring across the hinge. |
| T36IB, T36IT | 36-inch bottom-freezer with one or two refrigerator doors | Two independent cooling systems with a compressor each; the ice maker is in the drawer. |
The digits roughly mark the generation: 70 or 80 for the first units (36-inch bottom-freezers from the mid-2000s, Freedom columns from the late 2000s), 800 for the redesign that followed, and 900 from around 2017, with new electronics, magnetic door switches and, on some, a door-opening assist. The FD code on the label dates the build, and Thermador changed valves, power modules and defrost heaters at specific FD breaks. The platform was also sold as Bosch and Gaggenau; wine columns are under wine storage repair.
How a Thermador column or bottom-freezer works
Behind the toe kick sit the compressor, the condenser, a low-voltage condenser fan, the power module that runs the compressor, fans and heaters, and on many freezers an inverter for variable compressor speed. A room sensor in front of the condenser sets the fan speed, so in a cool kitchen the fan may barely turn. At the top of each compartment, behind a screwed cover, are the coil and its fan, the defrost and drain heaters, a coil sensor and a one-time thermal fuse. Defrost is adaptive, timed from run time and door openings.
The evaporator fan stops whenever the door switch reads open, and many units have a magnetic stop valve that holds refrigerant back while the compressor rests. Bottom-freezers have a separate sealed system for each compartment (compressor, coil, fan, heaters and sensors), with the refrigerator compressor on the left and the freezer's on the right, sharing one condenser fan, power module and control. The display shows the set point, not a measurement; the not cooling guide explains the modes that raise it.
What fails on Thermador built-ins, in the order we see it
Ice maker and water supply
What it usually is: the most common call on IF and ID freezer columns and on bottom-freezer drawers. The ice maker is one sealed assembly, and the newer replacement fits only units with the second water valve, so the FD code decides which one we order.
What you can check: the settings, bin, filter and water checks on Thermador ice maker not working, which clear many of these calls.
What we do: read its service light and test the valves and inlet heater before condemning the module.
Door dispenser on ID freezer columns
What it usually is: on T18ID and T24ID columns the cable across the hinge wears through after years of swings, and depending on which wires failed, the dispenser light, the ice and water, or the whole panel stops.
What you can check: the ice maker on, the child lock off, and a few seconds' wait after closing the door.
What we do: test the door cable, module, auger, flap, solenoids and valves. On our Thermador Refrigerator Ice Dispenser Not Working job in Irvine in September 2026, the dispenser flap and its motor had both failed.
Cooling faults: condenser, fans, defrost and the sealed system
What it usually is: on every generation a dusty condenser or a stopped fan comes first, then defrost, with leaks and compressors well behind. Several faults follow production dates. On the early-2010s bottom-freezer control, repeated condenser fan faults can switch the unit into demo mode. Thermador revised the bottom-freezer defrost heaters in mid-2011, after earlier ones could leak current and trip a GFCI. Units built before about December 2010 could jam the stop valve in a very hot machine compartment; Thermador later changed the power module to prevent it. US bottom-freezers also have a Thermador repair kit for corroded tubing in the compressor compartment.
What you can check: the FD code on the rating label, which tells us which of these changes your unit already has.
What we do: on earlier units a compressor change brings the unit out of its opening; on the 900 generation it comes out the front. For a sealed-system fault we confirm it with gauge and temperature readings and a check of the compressor electronics, then repair it in-house with LOKRING joints, the method Thermador specifies, and fit a new drier whenever the system is opened. See sealed-system repair. Symptoms, owner checks and the full list of causes are in Thermador refrigerator not cooling.
Doors, drawers and the French door mullion
What it usually is: custom panels put a lot of extra weight on the hinges. On three-door French door models, refrigerator doors that drift out of line and condensation along the flip mullion are a known issue, and Thermador released stronger hinges and an upgraded mullion heater for it. The freezer drawer is squared at its bracket, and the cabinet's height is set at its adjustable rear rollers.
What you can check: whether the panels still line up with each other and with the cabinetry. On three-door units, the DRY DOOR option keeps the mullion heater on.
What we do: fit or adjust hinges, square the drawer at its bracket, level the cabinet at the rear rollers with the unit in its opening, replace worn gaskets and test the mullion heater.
Sensors, power module, display and inverter
What it usually is: a compartment sensor gone open or shorted (E01 refrigerator, E02 freezer), the room sensor (E15), the power module and display no longer talking (E20), or a failed inverter. LOWPOWER means the outlet voltage is too low to run.
What you can check: write down exactly what the display shows.
What we do: test each sensor and the control's outputs before ordering electronics.
How we repair them in place
The fan and power module slide out through the toe kick; the coil, heaters and sensors are reached from inside, so the panels and the cabinetry around them stay put. We protect the floor in front of the toe kick and the panels beside the opening. Thermador parts come from distributors or the manufacturer, usually in a few business days, and we tell you the lead time before you decide.
Coastal homes and humid kitchens
Very humid air can condense between two side-by-side columns, and there is a repair kit for it. On 36-inch bottom-freezers, rust can form on a cabinet back that touches a damp wall; units built from about August 2010 have an insulating pad there. The copper tubing in their compressor compartment can also corrode, so near the coast it is worth having the machine compartment checked once a year.
Repair or replace a Thermador built-in
Most parts are ordinary repairs at any age. Sealed-system work pays off when the cabinet and panels are in good shape, since a replacement must fit the same opening. Each column is a separate appliance, so a failed freezer column does not condemn the refrigerator beside it. On the oldest units we check parts by FD code first, because several replacements fit only units built after a production change. Still under Thermador's warranty? Call Thermador first. See the repair or replace guide.

Thermador refrigerator repair: questions
Where is the model number on a Thermador column or bottom-freezer?
On the rating label inside the compartment, which also carries the FD production code. A phone photo of it lets us check parts before the visit.
Can a Thermador column be repaired without taking it out of the cabinetry?
Usually. Fans, heaters, sensors, water valves and electronics are reached from the toe kick or from inside. On earlier units a compressor change brings the unit out of its opening, and you hear that with the written price, before any work starts.
Why can't I hear the condenser fan on my Thermador?
Its speed follows the room temperature, and in a cool kitchen it runs slowly or not at all. Silence at the toe kick matters only when the room is warm and the compartment is warming too.
Is a 15-year-old Thermador Freedom column worth repairing?
Usually. Most repairs at that age are fans, defrost parts, valves, ice makers or electronics, and you get the written price and parts lead time first.
Are you a Thermador service center?
No. We are an independent service, not affiliated with BSH Home Appliances or Thermador. We repair Thermador columns and bottom-freezers of all the generations on this page, and order Thermador parts through distributors or the manufacturer.
