Wolf Wall Oven Error Codes
Wolf SO and DO wall ovens with the rotating control panel spell most faults out in words, such as rtd open, cool fan or comm err. Only F1, the door latch, is a code. Each oven keeps its last seven faults, so the history is there before anything is tested.
$79 service call, applied to the repair. Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 7 PM.
In short: a word such as rtd open or relay stuck in the text area of the display is a logged fault. SABBATH, PANEL LOCKED, HOT during Proof and Lo on the probe are normal messages. Write down the exact words before you press OFF, and switch off the breaker if the oven heats while it is off.
Which Wolf wall ovens this page covers
These messages belong to Wolf's earlier built-in electric wall ovens: the SO30 and SO36 single ovens and the DO30 double oven, built after serial 11100847. Their display and keys sit on a motorized control head that turns to show them and turns back to hide them.
- SO or DO is a single or double oven, and 30 or 36 the width.
- F or U after the width is a framed or unframed door. Framed doors came only on 30-inch ovens.
- Serial 16000000 divides earlier and revised ovens in Wolf's parts listings. The revised ones dropped the bake stone element; the fault messages are the same on both.
Later Wolf wall ovens, the E series and M series, use later controls, and convection steam ovens are a separate line; see Wolf steam oven repair. If your oven has no turning control head, send us the model and serial from the tag under the control panel.
How the oven shows a fault
The display has a text area, and a logged fault appears there in words. The controller keeps the last seven faults for each oven, so a DO30 double oven holds fourteen, seven per oven. A technician steps through them and clears them once the repair is done.
The fault list is read in a technician mode that can also run the heating and the latch, so it is not covered here.
Messages that are not faults
| Code or display | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| PANEL LOCKED | The keypad lock is on; every key except OFF and PANEL LOCK is ignored | Hold PANEL LOCK for three seconds. PANEL UNLOCKED confirms it. |
| SABBATH | Sabbath mode; the oven holds its temperature and answers only OFF | Press OFF for that oven. |
| Lo for the probe temperature | The meat probe is still under 100°F | Normal at the start of a probe cook. |
| HOT during Proof | The cavity is above about 130°F, too warm for dough | Open the door until it drops below about 120°F. |
| Three chimes, then one every 30 seconds | The probe reached its set temperature | Unplug the probe. The oven keeps heating until you turn it off. |
| Door stays locked after self-clean | The latch holds until the cavity drops below about 300°F; a clean averages three hours plus an hour of cooling | Wait. On a DO30 the other oven cannot cook until the clean ends. |
| Panel will not turn while cooking | The head is meant to stay put while a mode or self-clean runs | Normal. Turn the oven off first. |
If the oven runs hot or cold and shows no message, check it with an oven thermometer before you change the temperature offset (set upo); see Wolf oven temperature off.
Fault messages by system
Each message in our own words, from the service documentation for these ovens. Meanings vary by model and era, and a message names a circuit, not a part.
Door latch
| Display | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| F1 | The door lock did not reach locked or unlocked within a minute, most often at the start or end of self-clean | Wait until the oven is fully cool, and never force the door. If it is still locked cold, or will not lock for a clean, call. See Wolf oven door locked. |
Oven temperature and probe
| Display | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| over temp | The cavity got hotter than any cooking mode allows, or hotter than self-clean should run | Press OFF. If the oven keeps heating, switch off its breaker and call. |
| rtd open | The oven temperature sensor reads as an open circuit | The oven cannot regulate without it. Call. |
| rtd shorted | The sensor reads as a short circuit | Call. |
| probe shorted | The meat probe reads as shorted, most often because its plug is not pushed fully into the socket | Push the plug in until it snaps home, or remove the probe. If it persists with no probe in, call. |
Display, keys and communication
| Display | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| keyboard error | The display cannot read the keys properly | Call; usually the control head. |
| key comm | The keys and the oven controller cannot exchange signals | Call; the flat cable first, then the controller. |
| comm err | Communication with the oven controller was lost; the fault points to the control head | Call; usually the head, after its cable is checked. |
| control com | Communication with the oven controller was lost; the fault points to the controller | Call; the flat cable first, then the controller. |
| SPI COM ERR | The control head cannot find the main controller | One breaker restart is worth trying. If it returns, call. |
Controller memory and setup
| Display | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| checksum | The controller checks its own memory each time it starts, and that check failed | An oven controller fault. Call. |
| eeprom | The controller cannot read or write its own memory | Call. |
| sensor cal | The controller could not calibrate the reading it takes from the sensor | A controller fault. Call. |
| FUSES WRONG | The controller's configuration is not valid | Press OFF, which normally clears it. If OFF will not clear it, the controller needs replacing. |
Relay board and cooling fan
| Display | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| relay stuck | The controller senses power going to an element when it should have none, usually a relay on the board stuck closed | If anything heats with the oven off, switch off the breaker. Call. |
| relay cal | A relay timing check failed | One entry is not a verdict. The relay board is replaced only if relay cal shows up four times in a row in the service test. |
| lower relay | On a double oven, the lower oven's relay circuit reports a failure | Call. |
| cool fan | The cooling fan or its circuit failed | Skip long bakes and self-clean until it is checked; the fan protects the electronics. |
When there is no message
| What you see | What it usually is | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Display dark | The breaker, a loose connection, or the relay board, controller or control head | Check the oven's breaker. Call. |
| Keys ignore you | Panel lock, Sabbath mode, or a loose flat cable to the head | Unlock or press OFF. Call if neither applies. |
| Panel will not turn with the oven off | The motor that turns the head, its small control board, or the main controller | Do not push or pry the head. Call. |
| Random beeping | Usually a problem with the power or the ground reaching the oven, sometimes a failing display | Call; we check the supply and ground first. |
| Long preheat in every mode except broil | The hidden bake element | On 240 volts a Bake preheat to 350°F takes about a quarter of an hour. Far longer is a clue; see Wolf oven not heating. |
| Convection fans run with the door open | The door switch inside the latch assembly | See convection fan problems. |
What the common messages turn out to be
On a wall oven most of the parts these messages point to sit behind the control panel, so we test them before the oven comes out of the wall.
F1: the latch assembly
What it usually is: the motorized latch, which combines the motor, the lock and unlock switches and the door switch. A tired motor or a dirty switch sets F1, and the same part can leave the fans running with the door open.
What you can check: let a self-cleaned oven sit for an hour or more, then try the door gently, once.
What we do: test the motor and each switch and replace the assembly if it fails. It sits behind the control panel, so the oven comes partway out.
rtd open, rtd shorted or over temp: the sensor
What it usually is: the sensor rod in the cavity or its connection, often after a self-clean. On over temp, a sensor that tests good moves the search to the relay board.
What you can check: whether the oven still heats at all, and whether the message showed up mid-clean.
What we do: measure the sensor against its specification and replace it from inside the oven, with nothing moved.
comm err, key comm, control com, SPI COM ERR
What it usually is: the flat cable between the turning head and the controller, then the head or the controller, depending on the exact message.
What you can check: whether the head still turns and the keys respond after one breaker restart.
What we do: reseat and test the cable, measure the supply to each board, then replace the part that failed. We confirm the board for your serial and its lead time before you decide.
cool fan, relay stuck or relay cal
What it usually is: the cooling fan motor, the board output that powers it, or a relay on the board. The fan running on after cooking until the oven cools to about 300°F is normal; silence while the oven is hot is not.
What you can check: whether the fan runs after a bake.
What we do: run the fan at both speeds, check the board output that powers it, and test the relays.
How we reach the parts in a finished wall
- Behind the control panel: the control head, controller, relay board, latch and upper cooling fan. The oven comes partway out of the cabinet to reach them, and we support it while it is out.
- Behind the back panel: the hidden bake element, the lower cooling fan and the high-limit, which on a single or upper oven sits on the back of the cavity above the left convection fan. These need the oven further out.
- From inside the oven: the sensor, convection fans, broil element and lights, with nothing moved.
- The cabinetry: trim and floor are protected before the oven moves.
Stay safe. If an element glows or the oven heats while it is off, or the display reads relay stuck, switch off the oven's breaker. Never force a locked door. Do not pull the oven out yourself: past its mounting a wall oven can tip forward, and the boards behind the panel carry household voltage whenever the breaker is on.
What a Wolf wall oven repair costs
The $79 service call covers the trip and the diagnosis. On a double oven we read both fault lists. The fee is applied to the repair when you approve the written price, and that price does not change once work starts. Typical ranges for wall oven repair:
Wall oven and steam oven repair
| Repair | Typical price, parts and labor |
|---|---|
| Oven temperature probe | $250 to $450 |
| Bake or broil element | $350 to $700 |
| Convection fan motor or element | $400 to $750 |
| Door lock motor or switch | $350 to $650 |
| Door hinge or glass | $350 to $750 |
| Steam oven descale and water-system service | $300 to $600 |
| Steam generator or pump | $600 to $1,200 |
| Electronic control board | $700 to $1,600 |
Typical Orange County ranges for parts and labor. The $79 service call is applied to any of them. Parts that ship from the manufacturer and older or discontinued models can run higher. You get the exact written price after the diagnosis and before any work starts.
A sensor replaced from inside the cavity usually costs less than a part that needs the oven pulled out of the wall. See Wolf wall oven repair, pricing, Wolf range error codes, all error code guides, or Wolf repair.

Wolf wall oven error codes: questions
What does F1 mean on a Wolf wall oven?
F1 is the only numbered code on these ovens. It means the door lock motor ran but the lock never reported that it had moved. On a wall oven the latch sits behind the control panel, so the oven comes partway out for the repair.
What does rtd open mean on a Wolf oven?
The oven temperature sensor reads as an open circuit, so the oven cannot regulate heat. The rtd shorted message is the opposite fault. Either way we test the sensor and its connection first.
Why does my Wolf oven say probe shorted?
Most often the meat probe plug is not pushed fully into its socket. Push it in until it snaps or remove the probe; if the message stays with no probe in, the probe or socket needs testing.
What does cool fan mean on a Wolf wall oven?
The control saw a failure of the cooling fan or its circuit. That fan keeps heat off the electronics, so avoid long bakes and self-clean until it is checked.
What do comm err and key comm mean?
The control head and the oven controller have lost contact, through the flat cable or a board. A breaker restart is worth one try; after that, the cable is tested before any board.
Why won't the control panel on my Wolf oven rotate?
It is designed not to turn while a mode or self-clean is running. With the oven off, a panel that will not turn points to the motor that turns it or a board; do not force it.
Does a Wolf double oven keep separate codes for each oven?
Yes. A DO30 stores seven faults for the upper oven and seven for the lower, and we read both before testing anything.
Do these messages apply to Wolf E series and M series ovens?
Not necessarily. Those ovens use later controls, so we read their faults against their own documentation. This page covers the SO and DO ovens with the rotating panel.
