In short: Gaggenau faults tend to follow the appliance: scale or water-supply trouble in a combi-steam oven, an oven that will not heat or has a cooling fan or door problem, a Vario gas or induction module that stops working, a refrigerator section that warms up or an ice maker that quits, and a dishwasher that will not drain. We are an independent service, not affiliated with BSH Home Appliances, the company that makes Gaggenau.

The Gaggenau lines we service

Gaggenau is a German brand that has belonged to BSH, the group behind Bosch and Thermador, since 1995. It sells two tiers, the 400 series and the 200 series, and its refrigeration and dishwashers are built on BSH platforms shared with those brands. Ovens and cooktops have more of their own design. What we see in Orange County kitchens:

  • Ovens. 400 and 200 series wall ovens, many of the 400 series with a side-hinged door instead of a drop-down one, plus combination microwave ovens and warming drawers.
  • Combi-steam ovens. Steam combined with convection heat, with a water tank or, on some models, a fixed connection to the water line and the drain.
  • Vario cooktops. Modules set side by side in the counter: gas and wok burners, induction, Teppan Yaki, electric grill and downdraft ventilation, plus full-surface induction cooktops.
  • Refrigeration. Vario cooling columns for refrigerator, freezer and wine, alone or side by side behind panels, and the 36-inch built-in bottom-freezer and French door models of the late 2000s and early 2010s (RB 491 and RY 491).
  • Dishwashers. Fully integrated machines behind panels. See luxury dishwasher repair.

E-number and FD number

The rating plate carries the E-Nr, which is the model, and the FD number, which dates the appliance. On a refrigerator the plate is inside the fresh-food section; on an oven, usually on the frame seen with the door open. Parts can change during production, so a photo of the plate lets us order the one that fits.

What fails on a Gaggenau, and why

Common faults by appliance:

Combi-steam ovens: scale and water

What it usually is: Orange County's hard water leaves scale in the steam generator, the pump and the water sensors. The oven asks for descaling, steam output drops, and in time the oven stops a cycle with a water message. On plumbed models a closed shutoff, a clogged inlet filter, a failing inlet valve or a slow drain gives the same symptoms from the other end.

What you can check: run the descaling program when the oven asks, fill the tank with the water the manual recommends, and on plumbed models make sure the shutoff under the counter is open.

What we do: a full descale and water-system service, then test the pump, the steam generator, the level sensing and the valve. See the steam oven descaling guide and wall, steam and speed oven repair.

Ovens that will not heat or hold temperature

What it usually is: a top, bottom or convection ring element that has opened, a temperature sensor that reads wrong, a relay on the control, or a cooling fan the control no longer sees, which stops the oven heating to protect the electronics. On models with pyrolytic self-clean, the door lock motor and its switches are the other common failure.

What you can check: note which heating modes still work, whether the cooling fan runs on after cooking, and any message on the display.

What we do: measure each element, the sensor and the relay outputs, test the fan and lock, and check the side-hinged door's hinges and gasket while the oven is open.

Vario gas and induction modules

What it usually is: on gas modules, a burner that sparks but will not stay lit, or clicks with the knob off after a spill. European-style gas tops like these usually guard each burner with a flame-failure device, so a burner that lights only while you hold the knob points at that device or its electrode. On induction, a cooling fan clogged with kitchen dust, a power board or a coil.

What you can check: burner caps seated, parts dry, and for induction a pan the zone recognizes and clear air vents under the counter. Smell gas? Turn the knobs off, leave the house and call the gas company or 911 from outside.

What we do: test ignition, flame sensing and the valve with the gas shut first, or the induction fan, board and coil. See gas and induction cooktop repair.

Refrigerator: one section warm

What it usually is: the 36-inch built-ins have two separate cooling systems, one compressor for the refrigerator and one for the freezer, so a fault usually hits one section only. The freezer compressor runs at variable speed through an inverter module, and the power module in the base drives both. A dirty condenser, a condenser or evaporator fan, a sensor, the inverter or the power module come first. On US models the copper tubing in the compressor area can corrode and leak, which stops one section cooling altogether.

What you can check: the set points, that doors and the freezer drawer close fully, and that the toe-kick grille is clear. Vacation and Sabbath modes raise the set points on purpose.

What we do: test the electrical side first, then confirm a leak or a failed compressor with readings and repair it in-house. See built-in refrigerator repair and sealed-system repair.

Defrost, frost and condensation

What it usually is: both evaporators have defrost heaters timed by an adaptive control. When a defrost heater or its safety fuse fails, frost builds up on the evaporator and that section warms. A failing heater can also trip a GFCI outlet and stop the whole refrigerator. Frost around the freezer drawer gasket usually means a gap at the bottom of the drawer front, and on French door models a left door that no longer sits square leaves gaps that bring condensation onto the evaporator cover.

What you can check: whether the outlet's GFCI has tripped, and whether the freezer drawer and doors seal evenly all round.

What we do: test heaters and fuses, adjust the drawer, and on French door models fit the stronger lower hinges BSH released for this and realign the doors.

Ice maker, water and the motorized shelf

What it usually is: the ice maker runs only with ICE on, the bin pushed fully home, the freezer cold enough and the water filter seated. A frozen water inlet, a failed water valve, or a blocked valve where the water hose connects stops it, and a worn seal at the hose connection makes it leak. The motorized glass shelf on some models can grind or sag when its sliders drift out of line.

What you can check: ICE shown on the display, the bin fully in, the filter turned all the way, the water shutoff open, and that Sabbath or vacation mode is off.

What we do: read the ice maker's own fault code, test the valve and the inlet heater, and realign or replace the shelf sliders. See ice maker repair.

Dishwashers that will not drain or that stop with a leak

What it usually is: Gaggenau dishwashers share BSH's dishwasher engineering, so the drain pump, the filter and a leak sensor in the base are the usual suspects. Our job Bosch Dishwasher E25 Error: The Drain Pump Fix (Newport Beach, September 2026) is a typical case on the same platform.

What you can check: clean the filter, and check the drain hose and the disposal connection.

What we do: test the pump and the leak protection, and find where any water came from before the machine runs again.

What a Gaggenau refrigerator display tells you

These messages are for the 36-inch bottom-freezer and French door models of the late 2000s and early 2010s. Vario cooling columns, ovens, cooktops and dishwashers use their own messages, and meanings vary by model and production era, so tell us the E-Nr and FD when you call.

Code or displayWhat it meansWhat to do
E01, E02The refrigerator or freezer compartment sensor is open or shorted.Call. Keep the doors shut and watch the food temperature with a thermometer meanwhile.
E06, E07An evaporator sensor has failed. These appear after the control's self-test, which we run, rather than in normal use.Usually found on a visit for frost or warm temperatures.
E15The ambient sensor in front of the condenser is open or shorted.Call; the control uses it to run the condenser fan.
E10, E11A software fault in the power module in the base or the display module.Unplug or switch off for a few minutes; if it returns, call.
E20The power module and the display module are not talking.Power off and on once. If it stays, the boards or the cable need testing.
DOOROPENA door or the drawer has been open for more than 30 seconds.Close it. If it shows with the door shut, the door switch or the alignment is off.
LOWPOWERThe supply voltage is too low and the unit waits until it recovers.Check the outlet and breaker; often a supply problem, not the refrigerator.
ALARM flashing with the set temperatureThe freezer has been warmer than about 21°F for half an hour.Press alarm off to see the warmest temperature reached, then check doors and the drawer.
Red LED flashing on the ice makerThe ice maker's own code: one long flash, then three groups of flashes.Note the groups and tell us; it narrows the part down.

Codes for the other brands we service are on error codes.

How we work on Gaggenau in a finished kitchen

  • Refrigerators from the base. On the 36-inch built-ins the power module, the inverter and the condenser fan are reached from the front once the toe-kick panel is unscrewed, so most electrical cooling repairs are done in place. A compressor change means sliding the unit out of its opening and opening the back panels, and we tell you first. The units are top-heavy and anchored to the wall, and the panels hang on brackets we leave undisturbed when we can.
  • Ovens in the cabinet where possible. Sensors, lamps, lock parts, door hinges and gaskets are reached from the front. A part at the back means the oven comes out onto padding, and we tell you first.
  • Vario gas modules closed off first. The supply is closed before a Vario burner, valve or flame-failure part comes out, and every joint we opened is leak-checked.
  • Sealed-system work in-house. We are EPA-certified for refrigerant work, and leak repairs, tubing repairs and compressor replacements on these two-system refrigerators are done by us, not sent out.
  • Lead times up front. Common parts are on the van. Gaggenau parts come from BSH or a distributor, usually in a few business days, and we say so before you decide.

Gaggenau repair: questions

Can you repair a side-hinged Gaggenau oven door?

Yes. Many 400 series ovens open to the side, and the hinges and the door gasket are reached from the front with the oven in its cabinet. A door that drops at the handle side or no longer seals evenly usually needs the hinges adjusted or replaced and a new gasket.

Is a Gaggenau refrigerator the same as a Thermador inside?

Some are. The 36-inch built-in bottom-freezer and French door models of the late 2000s and early 2010s share their platform with Thermador and Bosch built-ins. Ovens, Vario cooktops and the trim and controls are Gaggenau's own.

How often should a Gaggenau combi-steam oven be descaled?

Whenever the oven asks, and sooner if steam output drops. With Orange County's hard water that comes around more often than the manual's average, and skipped descaling is behind many steam oven repairs.

What does E20 mean on a Gaggenau refrigerator?

On the 36-inch built-ins it means the power module in the base and the display module have lost contact. Switch the unit off and on once; if the code stays, the boards or the cable between them need testing.

Why is ice forming around my Gaggenau freezer drawer?

Usually the drawer front has a gap at the bottom, so damp air gets in and freezes on the gasket. The drawer can be adjusted, and we check the gasket and the defrost while we are there.

Do you repair Vario cooktops?

Yes: gas and wok modules, induction, Teppan Yaki and grill modules, and the downdraft ventilation units. Tell us which module it is and what it does; a photo of its rating plate helps us bring the right parts.

How much does a Gaggenau repair cost?

A sensor, fan, heater or gasket is a smaller repair; a combi-steam oven's steam generator, a control module or sealed-system work on a two-system refrigerator is the larger one. Parts come from BSH or a distributor, and we give you the lead time with the written price.
