Sub-Zero 700 Series Integrated Repair

The 700 series was Sub-Zero's integrated line before today's IC and IT models: tall units and drawers behind custom panels, with the machinery at the base. Every one still running is more than a decade old, and most repairs are airflow, door hardware, defrost, sensors and ice makers.

$79 service call, applied to the repair. Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 7 PM.

  • $79service call, applied to the repair you approve
  • In-housesealed-system work: compressors, evaporators, leaks
  • Since 2022CA BHGS #50388, EPA-certified
  • 90 daysno-fee return visit if the same fault comes back

In short: find the -2 or -3 suffix after the model first, because controls, codes and even the number of compressors changed between eras. Then check the toe-kick grille and the seals. Most faults are part-level repairs; ranges are in the price table below.

How to tell which 700 you have

The model is on the serial tag inside the unit, and its suffix (-2, -3, or none on the earliest units) gives the generation. Tall 700 models are 27 inches wide, 736 models 36 inches.

  • 700TR and 736TR: all refrigerator, a door on top and refrigerator drawers below.
  • 700TC/I and 736TC/I: a combination, refrigerator above and freezer drawers below, with an ice maker.
  • 700TF/I and 736TF/I: all freezer with an ice maker, often paired with an all-refrigerator.
  • Base units: 700BR refrigerator drawers, 700BF/I freezer drawers with an ice maker, and the 700BC/I, which puts refrigerator and freezer drawers in one cabinet.
EraSerial rangeWhat changed
OriginalBefore serial 1670316A simple electronic control and a master power switch at the base. The 700TC/I has one compressor, with baffles sharing cold air between the zones.
700-2Serial 1670316 to serial 2347395Separate controls for tall and base units, and separate refrigerator and freezer compressors in the 700TC/I. Stored codes arrive partway through this run, plus a variable speed freezer, the 700TF/I-2V.
700-3Tall units after serial 2377228700 and 736 tall units with added codes for the ice maker valve and long compressor runs, Sabbath and showroom modes, and new ice maker types. The base drawers have their own -3 version.
736 updateAfter serial 2970000Revised 36 inch tall units with a different ice maker and updated components.

If your serial falls between two rows, the suffix decides.

A model starting IC, IT or ID is the later line: see Designer and Integrated repair. Other lines are on the Sub-Zero repair page.

How a 700 is built

  • A tray behind the kickplate. Compressor, condenser and fan ride on a tray behind the bottom grille, and the cabinet is anchored behind the side moldings.
  • Zones by airflow on the early units. The original 700TR, 700TC/I and 700BR share cold air between zones through baffles; on the 700TC/I, seals keep the freezer and refrigerator air streams apart.
  • Two systems on later combinations. From the -2 era on, each side of a 700TC/I or 736TC/I has its own compressor, so one can fail while the other keeps working.
  • Defrost and two small heaters. Only freezers have a defrost heater. Two smaller heaters matter too: one keeps the freezer drain from icing, one keeps the ice maker's water tube clear. A failure shows as water under the bottom drawer or no ice.
  • Controls. A keypad and LCD at the top of the upper compartment on tall units, inside the top drawer on early base units.
  • R-134a in every era, so none of the old-refrigerant questions of vintage units.

What the display is telling you

Signs an owner can read without any service mode; full code tables are on 600 and 700 series diagnostics.

  • Dashes in place of temperatures on an original unit: it is switched off at the keypad.
  • -20- or -55- with a flashing zone indicator on an original unit: that zone's sensor is open or shorted.
  • Flashing SERVICE: usually a compressor ran far longer than normal, which a dirty condenser, a leaking door, frost or the sealed system can all cause. On -3 and 736 units an ice maker water fault can also set it. See service light.
  • Steady SERVICE on a later -2, a -3 or a 736: codes read in diagnostics stay stored until the fault is fixed and a technician clears them.
  • No ICE on the display of a -3 unit, or no ice cube icon on a 736 after serial 2970000: the ice maker is switched off.

What fails on a 700, most common first

Condenser and a blocked toe-kick

What it usually is: owners often look for a top grille that a 700 does not have. Its coil is at floor level, and years of dust and pet hair make the compressor run long and hot.

What you can check: turn the breaker off, then vacuum the full width of the bottom grille. If a rug or a remodel panel covers any part of it, that is the likely cause.

What we do: pull the kickplate, clean the coil and the fan blade, and watch the compressor cycle off normally. See the condenser cleaning guide.

Door hinges, drawer closers and gaskets

What it usually is: tall-unit hinges bind with age and a heavy panel, so the door stops closing on its own. Each drawer has a closer that pulls it shut over the last few inches, and it can trip out of position. Gaskets flatten or tear with age.

What you can check: close the door from halfway and push each drawer gently to an inch from shut; both should finish closing by themselves. Look for torn or flattened gaskets.

What we do: correct the hinge, reset or replace the closer, replace gaskets in place and re-level the unit. See door not closing.

Air baffles and duct seals between zones

What it usually is: on the original 700TR, 700TC/I and 700BR, a baffle (an electrically operated air door) that sticks or stops moving, or a worn seal between air passages. One drawer runs warm or freezes produce while the rest is fine.

What you can check: keep packages off the rear vents, and note which zone is wrong and by how much.

What we do: test the baffle and its signal, repair the seals, and tell you the options where a baffle part is no longer made.

Freezer defrost and the heated drain

What it usually is: a failed defrost heater, a failed thermal switch that ends each defrost, or a failed drain heater. Frost packs the freezer coil, or meltwater freezes in the drain and spills under the bottom drawer.

What you can check: frost on the freezer's back cover, ice in the bottom of a drawer, water at the kickplate.

What we do: find the failed part, thaw and clear the drain, and confirm the next defrost. See frost buildup and leaking water.

Sensors, keypad and control board

What it usually is: a sensor that reads wrong, a keypad that stops responding, or a board relay. The 700TF/I-2V and the 700TF/I-3 also have their own variable speed compressor controller.

What you can check: the display, and whether every key responds.

What we do: read stored codes, test the sensor, keypad and board, and replace the failed part.

Ice maker

What it usually is: a frozen fill tube from a failed tube heater, a valve screen clogged by hard water, low water pressure, or a worn ice maker. On -3 tall units the bucket presses a switch, so a bucket not fully seated stops production. On -3 and 736 units the control also pauses it for 45 minutes after each harvest.

What you can check: ICE on the display, the bucket pushed fully home, the shut-off arm down, and the supply valve open.

What we do: test flow, valve, heater and ice maker, and identify which of several ice maker types your era uses. See ice maker not working.

Sealed system

What it usually is: a worn compressor, a leak or a restriction, most often on the oldest units.

What you can check: nothing safely on the system itself. Note whether the whole unit is warm or only one side.

What we do: measure the system to confirm the fault, give you a written price, and do leak and compressor work in-house. See compressor replacement and sealed-system repair.

Repair or replace a 700

Small parts are worth fixing on any 700 that still seals and closes well. A sealed-system repair makes most sense on a -3 or 736 unit whose doors and drawers are in good shape, and least on an original unit worn everywhere. As an independent service, not affiliated with Sub-Zero Group, we order parts from distributors or the manufacturer and give you the lead time first.

Replacement is rarely a simple swap. The opening, panels and anchoring were built around the 700, and even a 736 opening needs its dimensions and panel fit confirmed before a new unit is ordered. See the repair or replace guide and how long Sub-Zero refrigerators last.

Sub-Zero 700 series: questions

How do I know which generation of 700 I have?

A -2 or -3 after the model number, or the serial range, tells us the era. Send a photo of the tag inside the unit and we will confirm.

Are parts still available for a Sub-Zero 700?

Most common parts are, some as updated substitutes. Original-era baffles and early controls are the hardest to find, and we tell you what can be sourced before you decide.

What does a flashing SERVICE mean on my 700TC?

Usually a compressor ran much longer than normal; on -3 and 736 units it can also be an ice maker water fault. Clean the bottom grille and check the seals; if it keeps flashing, a technician reads the stored codes.

Why is one drawer of my 700TR warmer than the others?

On early units each zone gets air through a baffle, so a stuck baffle or leaking seal affects one drawer alone. A drawer that does not fully close does the same.

Can a 27 inch 700TC be replaced with a new unit of the same size?

Usually not as a straight swap. The later IT tall combinations come in 30 and 36 inch widths, so a 27 inch opening normally needs cabinet changes and new panels. That is one more reason to price the repair first.
