Sub-Zero Undercounter Refrigerator and Drawer Repair
A Sub-Zero undercounter unit breathes through its kickplate and gets opened far more often than a full-size built-in. Most problems come down to a clogged grille and condenser, a door or drawer that no longer seals, a fan or a sensor, and we usually fix them in place.

In short: the whole refrigeration system of an undercounter Sub-Zero sits behind the kickplate, so a blocked grille hurts an undercounter unit faster than a full-size built-in. Check the grille, check that the door closes on its own, and note whether SERVICE is flashing. A dark unit is often a tripped breaker or GFCI. We are an independent service, not affiliated with Sub-Zero Group; see Sub-Zero repair for the other lines.
Which Sub-Zero undercounter you have
The model and serial tag is inside the cabinet. A phone photo of it tells us how the unit is cooled and which parts are still made.
- UC-24 series: the UC-24R refrigerator, the UC-24B and glass-door UC-24BG beverage centers, the UC-24RO outdoor refrigerator, and the UC-24C and UC-24CI refrigerator/freezer combinations, all with POWER, WARMER and COLDER keys. Units after serial 3603000 are a revised version with a smaller compressor and different sealed-system parts.
- Designer undercounter (DEU): the newer line in 15 and 24 inch widths, with beverage, refrigerator, wine and combination models, ADA-height versions, an outdoor-rated refrigerator and a 15-inch ice machine (DEU1550I).
- Drawers: the Integrated ID-24, ID-27, ID-30 and ID-36 refrigerator, freezer and combination drawers, some with an ice maker, and the 700 series base drawers (700BR, 700BF, 700BC). The slides and fronts carry the weight of everything inside.
- 200 series: the 245RFD refrigerator/freezer, 249R and 249RP refrigerators and 249FF and 249FFI freezers, run by a thermostat rather than a circuit board. Units before serial 1211440 use R-12. See vintage Sub-Zero repair.
- Ice and wine: the Designer DEU1550I, UC-15I, 315, 235 and 506 ice machines are on Sub-Zero ice maker repair; the UW-24 and 315W are on Sub-Zero wine storage repair.
How an undercounter Sub-Zero is built
Compressor, condenser and condenser fan sit on a tray in the base. Room air enters through one part of the kickplate grille, crosses the condenser and leaves through another part of the same grille. There is no top grille and no open space behind the unit, so the front grille is its only way to shed heat.
Refrigerator and beverage models have one evaporator with a fan and defrost during the off cycle: the control keeps the compressor off until the evaporator has warmed above freezing, so the frost melts without a heater. The UC-24C combination runs one sealed system with the evaporator on the freezer side; a small fan and a motorized baffle meter cold air into the refrigerator section, and a heater defrosts the evaporator. The old 249R and 249RP have no evaporator fan at all.
The UC-24 control stores fault codes and tracks compressor run time. The POWER key does not remove power from the board, so use the breaker before anyone works near the kickplate.
What fails, in the order we usually see it
Kickplate grille and condenser blocked
What it usually is: lint, pet hair and dust packed into the grille and the condenser, plus spilled drinks in bars and leaves in outdoor kitchens. The compressor runs long and hot, the cabinet drifts warm, and a UC-24 may flash SERVICE after unusually long compressor runs.
What you can check: a rug, trash pull-out or pet bed against the grille, and grille openings that look matted. With the breaker off, a vacuum with a brush attachment on the grille face is safe.
What we do: remove the kickplate and clean the condenser and fan. See the condenser cleaning guide.
Door or drawer not sealing
What it usually is: a flattened gasket, a door closer that no longer pulls the door the last few inches, a unit that settled out of level, or drawer slides worn by heavy loads. Humid air comes in all day: frost on the evaporator, sweating at the cabinet edge, and a unit that never reaches its set point.
What you can check: open the door halfway and let go; it should close on its own. Look for folds in the gasket and a drawer that sits proud of its neighbors.
What we do: replace the gasket, adjust or replace the closer or slides, and re-level the unit. See Sub-Zero door not closing.
Evaporator fan or condenser fan
What it usually is: a motor that starts to tick or buzz, then stops. Inside, that leaves a frosty evaporator and warm shelves; at the base, the condenser overheats. On the UC-24 combination the fan is replaced as a complete unit, not motor and blade separately.
What you can check: listen inside the cabinet and at the kickplate for a new noise or silence. Do not reach into a fan.
What we do: test the motor and the board output driving it, and replace the part that failed.
Sensor, keypad or control board
What it usually is: a sensor reading the wrong temperature, a keypad membrane or ribbon cable that no longer registers a press, or a board relay that no longer switches the compressor. A SERVICE that stays on without flashing usually means codes are still stored from an earlier problem.
What you can check: whether the keys respond, and whether the display agrees with a thermometer left in a glass of water on the middle shelf for a few hours.
What we do: read the stored codes, test the sensor and keypad circuit, and replace what failed. See undercounter error codes.
Defrost on combination and freezer units
What it usually is: defrost that has stopped, so frost builds on the freezer evaporator. On the UC-24C and freezer drawers it is usually the defrost heater or the switch that ends each defrost; the 245RFD also has a mechanical defrost timer that can stick; on any of them a blocked drain refreezes the meltwater. On a combination the refrigerator section shares that evaporator, so the first sign is often a warm refrigerator section and a freezer that still feels cold.
What you can check: frost on the evaporator cover and water on the cabinet floor. Do not chip at the ice.
What we do: replace the failed part, clear the drain, thaw the evaporator and confirm the next defrost works. See Sub-Zero frost buildup.
Sealed system: leak or compressor
What it usually is: a leak or a compressor that no longer pumps. These systems hold only a few ounces of refrigerant, so even a slow leak means a unit that runs nonstop and never gets cold.
What you can check: nothing an owner can safely test. Once the kickplate grille is clean and the door closes on its own, a unit that still runs warm needs a technician.
What we do: confirm with temperature and pressure readings, then quote in writing. Later UC-24 units are repaired with LOKRING connectors, and we do that work in-house. See sealed-system repair.
The ice makers in the UC-24CI, 245RFD, 249FFI and Integrated ice drawers fail like other Sub-Zero freezer ice makers and are covered on the ice maker page.
Outdoor kitchens and bars
Only outdoor-rated models such as the UC-24RO and the outdoor Designer refrigerator belong outside. Even outdoor models suffer in afternoon sun, next to a grill, or in salt air near the coast.
On an outdoor counter, a GFCI that trips again within minutes of a reset usually means water has reached a connection or a part is failing. Leave it off and call. See outdoor kitchen refrigeration repair.
Repair or replace an undercounter Sub-Zero
Fans, sensors, gaskets, closers, slides and keypads are modest repairs, done from the front, and usually worth it. A unit pulled past its anti-tip bracket can tip forward, so when a repair needs it out, we empty it and do it ourselves. The harder call is the sealed system, a bigger share of a small unit's value.
- Later UC-24, Designer and Integrated drawers: a sealed-system repair usually makes sense, especially on a panel-ready unit whose panel matches the kitchen.
- Original UC-24 (before serial 3603000): repair anything short of the sealed system; for a compressor we look at the cabinet, door and control first and say plainly if we would not do it.
- 200 series and older 700 drawers: parts are getting scarce, and on R-12 units sealed-system work is expensive and uncertain. A failed compressor on a 200 series usually means replacement.
Before replacing, check that the new model fits the same opening and accepts your panel. More on the decision in repair or replace a built-in refrigerator.
What undercounter repair costs
Most undercounter repairs are done from the front once the part is here, and the $79 service call goes toward the repair you approve in writing.

Sub-Zero undercounter repair: questions
What does a flashing SERVICE light mean on a Sub-Zero UC-24?
The control saw the compressor run much longer than normal. Clear the kickplate grille and check that the door seals; if it keeps flashing, it is likely a fan or refrigeration problem and worth a call.
Can I install an indoor Sub-Zero undercounter refrigerator outside?
No. Use an outdoor-rated model such as the UC-24RO. An indoor unit in an outdoor kitchen faces heat and moisture it was not designed for and usually fails early.
Why is my Sub-Zero beverage center sweating or frosting up?
Usually humid air getting in: a worn gasket, a door that does not close on its own, or very frequent opening. We check the seal, the closer and the leveling first.
Can you fix Sub-Zero refrigerator drawers that will not close?
Yes. It is usually a worn slide, a damaged gasket or a shifted drawer front, and we usually replace or adjust them in place without pulling the unit out.
How often should the grille on an undercounter Sub-Zero be cleaned?
At least twice a year, and every few months in a bar, a home with pets or an outdoor kitchen. Turn the breaker off and use a brush and a vacuum.
Is an old Sub-Zero 200 series undercounter worth repairing?
For a fan, thermostat, gasket or door closer, often yes, if the part can still be found. For a compressor or leak, usually not, especially on R-12 units. We tell you what can be sourced first.
