Sub-Zero · Troubleshooting

Sub-Zero Freezer Not Freezing

When a Sub-Zero freezer warms up while the refrigerator stays cold, the fault is usually on the freezer's own side, in its defrost, fan, compressor or door and drawer seals, or in the condenser the two systems share. A switched-off freezer zone or a drawer held open by the ice bucket you can rule out yourself.

$79 service call, applied to the repair. Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 7 PM.

In short: read the freezer half of the display: double dashes mean the freezer zone was switched off, EE a failed sensor, a Service icon a logged fault. Then check that the door or drawer closes fully, look for frost on the back wall, and clean the condenser.

Why a Sub-Zero freezer can fail on its own

Most household refrigerators cool both sections from one evaporator. A built-in Sub-Zero with a refrigerator and a freezer usually carries two compressors and two evaporators under one condenser fan at the top. The Classic Series combination models, the PRO 48, the Integrated tall combinations and the later 700 series tall units are all built this way.

The two systems share the condenser and the control board, and the freezer, holding 0°F, is usually first to show a dirty coil. The exception is the earliest 700 series tall combinations, built before serial 1670316, which cool the refrigerator with air from the freezer coil, so a freezer fault there warms both sections; see Sub-Zero not cooling.

What to check before you call

  1. Read the display. Two dashes in place of the freezer temperature mean that zone was switched off by itself, which Classic Series controls allow for cleaning, and it stays off through a power outage. SA and a small b mean Sabbath mode, which still cools.
  2. Check the set point. The factory setting is 0°F; Classic Series controls allow minus 5°F to plus 5°F. At the warm end food stays frozen but ice cream goes soft.
  3. Close the door or drawer and look at the seal. On over-and-under models the freezer is a drawer, and an ice bucket that is not seated or a box standing too tall holds it open a fraction of an inch. Frost on packages or along the gasket means humid air is getting in. See door and gasket problems.
  4. Look at the back wall. A white crust on the evaporator cover or ice around the air openings points at defrost or air flow. Move anything blocking the openings and leave the frost alone; frost buildup explains the patterns.
  5. Check the condenser. Look for a gray mat of dust on the coil behind the top grille. With the breaker off, clean it as the condenser cleaning guide shows.
  6. Listen with the door shut. The freezer fan should whir while the freezer compressor runs. It stops when the door opens and for a few minutes after each defrost, which is normal.

The usual causes on the freezer side

Freezer defrost failure

What it usually is: the refrigerator side of most Sub-Zero built-ins defrosts by running its fan while its compressor rests. The freezer cannot, so it has an electric heater at the bottom of the coil, that on many models also clears the drain trough, a thermal switch that ends each defrost, and a control that spaces defrosts by usage. When the heater burns out, the switch sticks or the drain freezes, frost builds up and chokes the coil. The freezer recovers after a thaw, then fades over days, and the ice maker slows first.

What you can check: a crust on the back wall and ice on the freezer floor.

What we do: test the heater, the switch and the board output, clear the drain, thaw the coil, and confirm the next defrost runs on its own.

Freezer fan stopped or iced

What it usually is: a worn motor, or ice from a defrost problem growing into the blade, so the cold never leaves the coil. Later Classic Series controls log it when this fan falls short of speed.

What you can check: silence, or a scraping or ticking sound, from the freezer with the door shut. See Sub-Zero making noise.

What we do: free the blade, find where the ice came from, and test the motor and its drive signal.

Air leaks at the door or drawer

What it usually is: a torn gasket, worn drawer slides, or a side-by-side freezer door whose hinge closer has worn under a heavy panel. In a freezer every leak turns into frost, so a small gap becomes a cooling problem within weeks.

What you can check: let the door go from halfway; it should close itself. A drawer front should sit evenly, with no gap at one corner.

What we do: replace or adjust the closer, slides or gasket, and level the unit.

Ice maker water in the wrong place

What it usually is: a water valve that seeps when closed, or a frozen fill tube spilling water past the mold. It freezes in sheets over the bin or coil cover and blocks the air. Orange County's hard water is a frequent cause.

What you can check: icicles near the ice maker or a bucket fused into a block. Switching the ice maker off at the control stops new water until the visit.

What we do: test the valve and fill tube heater and replace what failed. See ice maker not working.

Condenser or condenser fan

What it usually is: the shared coil packed with dust and grease, or a slowing fan. Early 600 series units, built before serial 1810000, can flash VACUUM CONDENSER on the display, and on those a warm freezer with that message starts at the coil. See Service light or condenser indicator.

What you can check: whether the freezer warmed up gradually over weeks, which points at the coil more than at a part that failed suddenly.

What we do: clean the coil, test the fan, and check the freezer compressor for heat damage.

Freezer sealed system

What it usually is: the freezer's own compressor or tubing has failed while the refrigerator system beside it keeps working, so only the freezer warms. A leak on the freezer side can let air and moisture into the system, and moisture that freezes in the fine tubing makes the cooling come and go.

What you can check: nothing safely.

What we do: confirm which part of the freezer system failed, give you a written price, and do the repair in-house. Our post Sub-Zero Freezer Not Cooling: Failed Compressor (July 2026, Orange County) is a recent example; see also compressor replacement.

Freezer sensor, relay or control board

What it usually is: a freezer sensor reading wrong, a failed switch on the control board that powers the freezer compressor, or a replacement board never set up for its model. On Classic Series units a dead freezer sensor shows EE, and a board that can no longer start the freezer compressor flashes the Service icon with a chime.

What you can check: EE, the Service icon, or a freezer reading that jumps around.

What we do: read the stored fault history, check the sensor against a reference thermometer, and test the board. See Sub-Zero error codes.

How it differs by series

  • Classic Series (BI): a separate freezer compressor on every combination model; over-and-under freezers are drawers. See Classic Series repair.
  • Integrated: each freezer column is a complete system of its own, and many faults appear on the touch display when the door opens. See Integrated repair.
  • PRO 48: two systems, and the control keeps a fault history that we read on the visit. See PRO 48 repair.
  • 600 and 700 series: old controls, years of dust and tired door closers. See 600 series and 700 series.
  • Undercounter freezer drawers: they breathe through the toe-kick, so lint or a rug against it warms them fast. See undercounter repair.

When to stop and call

Call if the freezer is above about 10°F a day after these checks, or sooner if you see EE or the Service icon, or hear the compressor click on and off every few minutes. Caught early, it is usually a fan or defrost part.

Do not chip at the ice. The coil sits just behind its cover, and one slip with a knife turns a defrost repair into a sealed-system repair. If the food is safe in a cooler, leave the frost for the visit: its pattern tells us a lot. Food that still has ice crystals can be refrozen.

What a freezer repair costs

The service call is $79, covers the trip and the diagnosis, and is applied to the repair when you approve the written price. For a warm freezer the defrost heater, evaporator fan, sensor and gasket rows apply most often.

Sub-Zero freezer not freezing: questions

Why is my Sub-Zero freezer warm but the refrigerator cold?

Most Sub-Zero built-ins give the freezer its own compressor, coil, fan and defrost, so the fault is in one of those or in the shared condenser.

Why is the ice cream soft in my Sub-Zero freezer?

Ice cream softens a few degrees above 0°F. If the set point is 0°F and the drawer closes fully, the freezer is usually losing ground to frost on the coil or a fan problem.

Will defrosting the freezer myself fix it?

For a few days or weeks, which confirms ice was the problem. The ice returns because the part that should prevent it is still broken.

Does a Sub-Zero freezer warm up during a normal defrost?

Slightly and briefly. Classic Series displays hold the last freezer reading during a defrost, and the freezer fan restarts a few minutes after the compressor.

My ice maker slowed down. Is the freezer the problem?

Often. The ice maker only harvests once its mold is well below freezing, so a freezer drifting warm makes less ice before the display shows much change.

Do you repair Sub-Zero freezer columns and freezer drawers?

Yes: Classic all-freezer units, Integrated freezer columns, over-and-under and Integrated freezer drawers, and undercounter freezer drawers across Orange County, Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 7 PM.
