Laguna Beach homes and kitchens
Laguna Beach housing changes block by block. Small beach cottages, some from the early decades of the last century, sit near the water in North Laguna and around the coves; many have been enlarged, with a built-in refrigerator fitted into a kitchen that was never planned for one. Contemporary homes step down the hillsides in Top of the World, Arch Beach Heights and Bluebird Canyon, often with the kitchen on the upper level for the view. Homes in gated communities such as Emerald Bay and Three Arch Bay face the ocean directly.
What these kitchens share is cabinetry built around the appliances in them.
What the coast does to a Laguna Beach kitchen
Sea mist and salt
What it usually is: salt in damp ocean air settles on condenser fins and fan motors and eats them slowly, faster with the windows open. On a range, damp air and a wet wipe-down are a common reason a burner keeps clicking after the knob is off.
What you can check: with the power off, look at the condenser through the grille. A white, powdery crust on the fins means it is time for a cleaning and a closer look.
What we do: clean the coil, test the fans, and tell you how much life the coil has left. See condenser cleaning.
Mildew in the door gaskets
What it usually is: humid air and a cold surface grow mildew in the folds of the gasket. Mildew itself mostly stains and smells; the seal goes when the vinyl stiffens with age or harsh cleaners, and then the unit starts to frost or sweat.
What you can check: wipe the gaskets with mild soap and warm water, dry them, and look for tears or flattened spots.
What we do: replace a gasket that no longer seals and check the hinges and closers behind it.
A cabinet made around an older unit
What it usually is: a 600 series or early Classic built-in whose custom opening leaves no room for a different-size replacement.
What you can check: the model and serial numbers on the rating tag, which tell us the series and era before the visit.
What we do: find what failed, and tell you when the sealed system or cabinet makes repair a poor buy. Our repair or replace guide explains how we decide.

Laguna Beach appliance repair: questions
Do you cover all of Laguna Beach, even homes down a long stairway?
Yes, from North Laguna to South Laguna and up Laguna Canyon, Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 7 PM, closed Sunday. A long stairway is fine; we carry the tools down to the unit.
Can a built-in fit a cottage kitchen that was not designed for one?
Often, if the cabinetry is built for it. Each built-in model needs an opening of a set width, height and depth, listed in its installation guide, and free air at the grille, so the cabinet work comes first.
Do black spots on the gaskets mean they need replacing?
Not on their own. If the spots wash off and a strip of paper closed in the door drags at every point, the gasket still seals. Replace it when it is torn, flattened or lets the paper slide out.
Can we put an indoor refrigerator on an ocean-view deck?
It is a poor idea. Indoor units are not built for sun, salt and rain and usually fail early outside. Use a model rated for outdoor use.
